A new Macintosh virus was recently discovered, called MBDF A.  This virus does not cause any intentional damage, though systems may crash due to incompatibility problems.  Some applications with self-checks such as those from Claris will alert users to the presence of extra resources.  This may be a symptom of possible infection.

  6. This virus seems to spread very quickly.  Given a clean system, running an infected application will infect the system file.  Once the system file has been infected, other applications become infected when they run.

  8. To combat this virus with SAM, virus definition information needs to be entered into SAM Virus Clinic.  Open SAM Virus Clinic and make sure you've selected the Full Menus option. Select Add Virus Definition (resource) from the Definitions menu.  Now enter the following information:

  10. Virus Name:     MBDF A
  11. Resource Type:  MBDF
  12. Resource ID:    = 0
  13. Resource Size:  = 630
  14. Search String:  HEX  48E7 0730 7C00 303C A9AA A146 B1F8 02AE
  15.                 ( do not enter any spaces)
  16. String Offset:  =   4   FROM START
  17.  
  18. (NOTE:  0 = zero)

  20. Please type in the search descriptions without any spaces.  As a guard against incorrect entry, SAM 3.0 has a "Check" field in the definition screen.  If the above information is entered correctly, your check field should be:  5081

  22. After you've entered the above information, click "Add" to add the definition to SAM.  This information should be added to the SAM User Definitions File located in your System Folder.

  30. -  Always make sure that you rescan files after you have repaired them with Virus Clinic. Under very rare circumstances it is possible for one virus to be "hidden" by another. It may not show up until the first virus is removed.
  31. Rescanning guarantees that such a hidden virus will not go undetected.

  33. -  Every time a new virus is discovered, Symantec will send out a mailing explaining how to get an update (for repair capability) and the necessary information for entering a virus definition.

Remember that entering the above user definition into SAM Virus Clinic only updates the detection capabilities of SAM.  For repair capabilities, users can download the virus definitions file (available on or before Feb. 28, 1992)  from the Symantec Bulletin board at (408) 973-9598, CompuServe, America Online or Applelink.

  39. - SAM version 2 owners can upgrade to SAM version 3 for $29 plus shipping. Contact customer service at 800-441-7234 to order this upgrade. If you are unable to get through on the toll free number, call 408-252-3570. SAM version will not be able to detect or repair this new virus.
